How are you measuring yourself?

Many weeks of sheltering in place with my husband, our dog and my bathroom scale, accompanied by lots of Netflix, food and drink while wearing sweat pants most of the time combined with  little exercise and fresh air is a recipe for weight gain. Before long, I found myself stepping on the bathroom scale several times a day. It wasn’t long before I learned that if I move it around on the floor, the numbers go up and down. If I step on it first thing in the morning then double check after I drink a cup of coffee, I can ‘gain’ as much as 2 lbs. You get it…it is completely unreliable.

That made me curious. Why does a low number still make me feel better than a higher number even when I know the measure is completely unreliable and without truth? And, what other arbitrary, external yardsticks do we use to measure our self-worth no matter how completely useless (and sometimes demoralizing) they are?

Thanks to my bathroom scale, I’m committed to spending more time looking within and giving myself credit for what I know I am rather than giving in to the temptation to look for external ratings!
